This year's running of the Indianapolis 500 was the 90th in the series held at the legendary track, affectionately called the Brickyard.

Year after year, the race has drawn the largest single day crowd for any sporting event in the world.

Tuesday, the traditional Memorial Day, marks the anniversary of the first 500-mile event at the track, held in 1911. The winner was Ray Harroun, driving a Marmon, at an average speed of 74 miles an hour.

That year, horses outnumbered cars by more than 30-to-1, but automobile racing had already captured the public's imagination. Some 200-thousand cars were sold during the year in 1911 today, that number of cars and light trucks are sold in about four days.
